The service

What it is and why it matters

Joinery covers the timber work inside a house: first fix (stud walls, floor joists, door linings, roof timbers) and second fix (doors, skirtings, architraves, stairs, panelling, shelving and fitted furniture).

Why professional help matters

Joinery is what you see and touch every day. Gaps at mitres, doors that catch, or skirting that follows a wavy wall are noticed for years. Good joinery takes time to set out and scribe properly.

Who it's for

Homeowners making changes, people renovating a newly bought house, and anyone who wants the timber details in a room to look crisp.

When you need it

When you're changing a layout, replacing tired doors and skirtings, adding panelling, or need a stair, bannister or boxing-in done neatly.

Getting it wrong

What happens when it's done badly

Poor joinery rarely fails dramatically, but it wears on you and often costs more to put right.

Doors that stick or swing open

Linings fitted out of plumb mean doors that never close properly.

Open joints and cracked caulk

Mitres that aren't cut tight open as timber moves, and filler cracks.

Squeaky floors and loose stairs

Poorly fixed boards and treads get noisier with use.

Paying twice

Cheap trim usually has to be removed, with damage to plaster, before it can be redone.

Common mistakes we see

  • -Using thin MDF skirting that dents and swells easily.
  • -Not allowing timber to acclimatise before fitting.
  • -Fitting trim before floors are laid, leaving gaps.
  • -Filling gaps with caulk instead of scribing to the wall.

Shelving and alcove units
